PEGUIS FIRST NATIONS ANNOUNCES HISTORIC PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CLINIC NETWORK CANADA INC.

Winnipeg, Manitoba: September 13, 2018 – Peguis First Nation (Peguis) announced it has entered into a historical investment partnership with The Clinic Network Canada Inc. (TCN). Under the terms of the investment Peguis will have approximately 10% ownership stake in Cura-Can Health Corp., the parent company of TCN. As a result of this investment, Peguis will have, through its holdings in Cura-Can Health Corp., ownership in Pain Management Clinics throughout Canada. Currently, Pain Management Clinics are under construction in Selkirk and Winnipeg, Manitoba, which are the first in a Canada wide expansion strategy.

TCN is a market-leading clinic platform operating in five Canadian provinces, with 12 multi-disciplinary clinics. TCN has developed a “Three Pillar” approach to clinical practice and provides an integrated combination of services to patients for pain management. These Three Pillars include: (i) Pain and Arthritis Management; (ii) Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation; and (iii) Medicinal Cannabis (as the alternative to traditional narcotics). TCN will look to serve Peguis members in the two clinics and through a planned mobile unit that will give access to services for Nation members in remote locations.

Chief Glenn Hudson stated:

As Peguis continues to diversify its investment holders, we are seeking partners open to collaborating in meaningful and tangible ways. TCN’s commitment to building meaningful relationship with First Nations is a model for how true economic reconciliation can be achieved.

This newly formed alliance with TCN, has provided Peguis with direct input and engagement in medical and ancillary services to be provided to its members and will be the platform for access and expansion of specialist pain services to all Canadians moving forward.

TCN’s COO Kim Wei commented:

This strategic relationship positions The Clinic Network Canada to provide access to specialized pain management services to both the Peguis members and the general population. Access to these services and innovative product offerings, are the distinguishing factors that will determine the success of these initiatives and uniquely position TCN and Peguis in the Canadian medical ecosystem. Our commitment to work with Peguis to create a model for all First Nations in Canada would see First Nations take ownership and control of their health care services and needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. WHERE WILL THE FACILITY BE BUILT, WHERE IS THE LOCATION?

You may have heard that Fuller Road will serve as the location for the Cannabis Production Facility. It will not. There are a number of locations being reviewed for the production facility in the Winnipeg and Selkirk Industrial areas.

2. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR PEGUIS AND ITS MEMBERS?

First Nations are becoming more and more engaged in the Cannabis Industry nationally. The unprecedented opportunities will create hundreds of permanent jobs, both on and off-reserve, as well as an equity ownership that will bring additional economic spin-offs to Peguis. The financial benefits include new self-generated revenue to better fund critical community needs, in areas such as: Elder Care, Housing and Health and Wellness services.

3. HOW DOES CANNABIS EFFECT THE DRUG PROBLEMS WE FACE IN OUR COMMUNITIES?

A survey conducted by the Canadian Centre on Substance use and Addiction (CCSA) reported that Alcohol and Drug Abuse were the number one challenges for community wellness faced by on-reserve communities.

Data from 2011 reveals that 55% of drug overdose deaths were related to prescription medications, of which, 75% involved opiate painkillers. Researchers found that opiate-related deaths decreased by approximately 33% in 13 states in the following six years after medical marijuana was legalized.

4. IS CANNABIS ADDICTIVE?

Former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders, MD stated that Cannabis “is not physically addictive” and alluded to the damaging impact of alcohol, which is legal. However, any kind of substance that effects you on a physiological level has the capacity to be addictive; this includes things like caffeine, alcohol and even exercise. Furthermore, anything in excess can be harmful to the body, so it is important to note that appropriate administration is critical with anything.

5. HOW WILL CANNABIS BE ACCESSED, WHERE WILL IT BE SOLD?

It will be sold in retail outlets across Manitoba. As the Manitoba Government just recently gave the approval for conditional licensing, it is not known for sure where any of the retail locations will be located. However, the retail stores themselves will need to pass Government of Manitoba inspection for adherence to strict Health & Safety Standards.

6. WHO CAN PURCHASE CANNABIS?

The Province of Manitoba has ruled that individuals 19 years of age and older, with valid identification, will be able to purchase Cannabis. This reduces the opportunity for usage by children & youth.

Peguis Housing Authority held a draw today to allow the 21 new homeowners to decide which lot and house they receive.

A total of 21 homes were built in this new housing project. One by one, the new homeowners took turns picking numbers to decide which lot and home they wanted.

This is the first new housing project of 21 homes on Pinese Road, located on the South end of the reserve. We, as a council, are glad to support our membership in receiving new homes. There is a backlog of 800 new homes for families and today we have completed 40 plus new homes with this project, CMHC and flood units. You can feel the excitement from the new homeowners and this is doubly exciting for Council and our housing board. It is a good day for our community. More houses being planned for 2019!” said Chief Glenn Hudson, Peguis First Nation.
